Power tools like chainsaws and snow blowers, also vehicles like snowmobiles, personal watercraft, and all-terrain vehicles, require gasoline engines. Most of these incorporate a manual starter pull cord system to provide the first force to start the engine. The starter pulley is attached to the engine's flywheel and crankshaft, and the pull rope is coiled around it. The user unwinds the starter cord from the pulley, causing the flywheel and crankshaft to rotate to start the engine. Engine starter pull cords use nylon fiber. Nylon pull cords aren't always strong enough to start the engine on the first try or even on consecutive attempts.
