The carb-to-manifold gasket is probably the second-largest possible air leak in a carbureted engine after the manifold gasket. The carb gasket is responsible for maintaining the fine line between where air should and shouldn't be; a failure here can ruin your engine's day. A carburetor works by drawing gasoline through the carburetor's metering jets and injecting it at the maximum point of vacuum and airflow to precisely blend it with the air. A leaking carburetor gasket won't let fuel out, but it will let air in where the vacuum signal is most important.
