Fuel is well-distributed to a carburetor, fuel injector, or fuel filter before being distributed by a fuel pump through fuel lines from the fuel tank to the cylinder chamber for burning. A fuel pump transfers fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor or fuel injector of an internal combustion engine. Low-pressure mechanical pumps outside the gasoline tank are commonly well-used with carbureted engines. Some fuel-injected engines use two fuel pumps: a low-pressure/high-volume supply pump in the tank and a high-pressure/low-volume pump on or near the boat engine. Engines typically employ electric fuel pumps installed inside the tank. Inefficient and polluting, a vessel engine will run rough and rich if the fuel pressure is too high because it won't consume all of the fuel pumps.
